Classification: Introduced Species - While the Amur Softshell Turtle has been seen and identified in Hawaii at this time there are no records of any breeding populations in the wild. Sightings of this species are most likely of released or escaped pets that were imported for the pet trade.


Description: The Amur Softshell Turtle (Pelodiscus maackii) looks very similar to the Chinese Softshell Turtle (Pelodiscus sinensis). The difference is in the shape of the shield. If the shield is more flattened near the edges it is P. maackii. This aquatic species may attain a straight carapace length of 1.1 fett.


Habitat: freshwater (rivers and tributaries, swamps)


Range: Russia (Amur, Ussuri, Sungari and Liao-che River systems in the Far East) NE China, Democratic Republic of Korea, South Korea, & Kyrgyzstan. Type locality: rivers south of the Amur River, namely Sungari and Ussuri Rivers and course of the Amur River between the Sungari and Ussuri Rivers.


Found in these States: HI


Diet: Softshell turtles eat a variety of insects, amphibians, eggs, and fish in the wild.


Reproduction: oviparous.


Status: Unknown.
