Eastern Spiny Lizard (Sceloporus spinosus)Species of Least Concern

Description: Coming Soon!

Habitat: This species occurs in a wide variety of habitats including dry scrubland, juniper forest, oak forest, and within secondary forest and crops (traditional).

Range: This species is a widespread endemic found over much of central Mexico. It ranges between 1,500 and 2,300 m asl. It has also been seen in several states in the United States. These seem to be released pets or hithchikers that have made their way to these states. No breeding populations have been identified at this time.

Found in these States: CA | GA | TX

Diet: It is an insectivorous species.

Reproduction: oviparous. The females lay a single clutch annually of between 10 and 30 eggs.

Status: Listed as Least Concern in view of its wide distribution, presumed large population, and because it is unlikely to be declining fast enough to qualify for listing in a more threatened category.

Subspecies: Three, with none in our region.
Sceloporus spinosus apicalis
Sceloporus spinosus caeruleopunctatus
Sceloporus spinosus spinosus
