Anniellas of the United States
These are long and slender lizards with moveable eyelids. Although legless, they still retain hip and shoulder bones internally. They are related to the anguid lizards, from which they differ by the absence of external ear openings, and bony armor within the skin. California Legless Lizards burrow in loose soil and are sledom seen on the surface. They eat insects and the young are born alive.
There is only one specie of Anniella in the U.S.
Found in western California from San Francisco Bay south into Baja California.
