Spotted Frog (Rana pretiosa)


Adult Size: 2" to 4"

Description: Large and brown with ill defined dark spots, sometimes with light centers. The dorsolateral ridges are present. A dark mask if bordered by a light stripe on the upper jaw. The underside varies from yellow to orange to red, usually with dakr mottling on the throat. The toes are fully webbed and the eyes are turned slightly upward. Males are smaller than the females and have swollen thumbs.

Voice: A series of short rapid croaks without much carrying power.

Habitat: Mountainous areas near cold streams and lakes. Reported to move overland in the spring and summer.

Breeding: March to June. Egg clusters free.

Range: Found in extreme southeastern Alaska and north-central British Columbia, south to western Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, and Oregon. Scattered populations in Utah, Nevada, and western Oregon and Washington.

Diet:

Behavior: Diurnal. It does not regularly frequent ponds and lakes where water is warm enough to allow for extensive growth of emergent vegetation, such as cattails.
