Great Basin Spadefoot Toad
(Scaphiopus intermontanus)
Adult Size: 1½" to 2"
Description: A stout toad with a wedge shaped spade on each hind foot and a glandular hump between the eyes. The external eardrum is apparent. The skin is relatively smooth, but many minute tuberlces are present. Coloration is olive to gray-green, with light stripes along the flanks. The belly is white.
Voice: A series of low pitched throaty notes given rapidly.
Habitat: Forested areas and sagebrush flats. Digs a burrow in loose soil or uses burrows of other animals.
Breeding: April to July, usually following heavy rains. Utilizes springs and slow moving water as well as temporary pools.
Range: Found from southern British Columbia south to eastern California, east to Colorado and northwestern New Mexico.
Diet:
Behavior: Primarily nocturnal. It is occasionally found abroad in daylight foraging for insects and can sometimes be brought to the surface by loud stamping near ts burrow.
